Course Overview

This course offers a technical foundation in (micro-)CT scanning (Computed Tomography). Participants will acquire the necessary skills to operate this technology effectively, moving from initial data capture to final visualisation.

The curriculum focuses on providing a structured workflow for CT-based imaging through the following modules:

  • Data Acquisition: An analysis of scanner types, acquisition parameters, and protocols for obtaining high-quality data across various scientific applications.
  • Image Reconstruction: Principles of transforming raw scan data into usable volumetric images.
  • Segmentation Techniques: Practical methods for isolating structures of interest and managing complex datasets.
  • Data Postprocessing: Implementation of postprocessing workflows, including noise reduction, image enhancement, and dataset preparation for quantitative analysis.
  • Visual Communication: Creation of high-quality images and videos to represent CT data in research publications and presentations.

The course is designed to be accessible and hands-on, making it ideal for beginners seeking a structured introduction to CT-based imaging workflows.

  • Preprocessing the image set: Tools to ease the segmentation.

    • A.I. in segmentation
  • Postprocessing of the 3D mesh: Improvement of the 3D model after segmentation
  • Visualisation of results: How to present your results in a polished, publication-ready format
    • Obtaining HQ images
    • Generating and editing of videos

Assumed background

Participants should hold a degree in a field of Life and Earth Sciences.

Dates & Schedule

Online live sessions on October 14th, 16th, 19th, 21st, and 23rd, 2026.

14:00-18:30 (Madrid time zone)

Total course hours: 25 (22.5 hours of online live lessons, plus 2.5 hours of independent work)

Format

In the live sessions, we will combine theoretical lectures with practical exercises.

Live sessions will be recorded. However, attendance to the live sessions is required to obtain the course certificate.

This course will be delivered in English.
