Course Overview

This course aims to train participants in selecting the appropriate methodology for 3D data acquisition. The full photogrammetric workflow will be covered, from initial data capture to file preparation for 3D printing and other applications such as Virtual Reality.

This course aims to train participants in the use of a structured-light laser scanner (Creaform GoScan50) and VXElements software to create 3D models of small and medium-sized objects.

Places are limited to 12 participants.

Programme

Photogrammetry

  • Theoretical introduction to the use of 3D models in different fields of research, documentation, and knowledge transfer (teaching and outreach).
  • Overview of 3D data capture techniques: hardware, software, and file formats.
  • Hands-on 3D data acquisition using laboratory equipment. Basic principles of photography will be covered, including camera settings and synchronisation with an automated turntable.
  • RAW file download and development practice.
  • Processing with Agisoft Metashape: image import, masking, alignment, point cloud cleaning, meshing, texturing, and export to .obj and .stl formats.

Laser Scanning

  • Explanation of the technological operation of the GoScan50 scanner.
  • Introduction to VXElements software.
  • Scanning practice:
    • Scan session setup
    • Mesh alignment and merging
    • Model editing in VXModel
    • Export to .obj and .stl formats

Virtual Reality (optional session)

  • This session will focus on learning how to visualise the 3D models created during the photogrammetry and laser scanning sessions using Oculus 2 and Meta 3 devices.

Format

The course combines theoretical lectures with practical demonstrations.

This course will be delivered in English.

A course certificate equivalent to 1 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) will be provided to all participants who complete the course. The recognition of ECTS by other institutions depends on each university or school.

Assumed background

Participants should hold a degree in a field of Life and Earth Sciences.

No previous experience in photogrammetry or laser scanning is required.

Equipment

Participants are expected to bring their own laptop.
