Course Overview

The main objective of this course is to provide participants with practical training in the use of FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) 3D printers, including the necessary theoretical background related to this manufacturing technology.

Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become familiar with this technology, enabling its use in professional projects, including:

  • Understanding the basic principles of 3D printing technology: its possibilities and limitations.
  • Learning the processes and workflow involved in FFF 3D printing.
  • Exploring open-source tools for 3D printing.
  • Practicing 3D printing using different printers and 3D models.

Places are limited to 12 participants.

Programme

Block 1. Introduction

  • Introduction: Definition of Additive Digital Manufacturing Technology (ADMT) and 3D printers
  • History and industrial context of ADMT as a new manufacturing paradigm
  • ADMT families: the three main categories—features, possibilities, and limitations. Tips and warnings
  • The 10 principles of 3D printing
  • Legislation: intellectual property and 3D printing

Block 2. FFF 3D Printers I

  • FFF printers: basic anatomy, types of printers and filaments, pre-printing tips
  • Workflow: from digital file to printed part (file types such as STL, OBJ, 3MF; slicing; post-processing)
  • Introduction to Prusa hardware: Prusa i3 MK3.5S
  • Introduction to Prusa software: PrusaSlicer
  • Sample print

Block 3. FFF 3D Printers II

  • Introduction to Bambu hardware: Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo and Bambu Lab H2D Combo
  • Introduction to Bambu software: Bambu Studio
  • Sample print

Block 4. 3D Printing I

  • Individual/group project and printing

Block 5. 3D Printing II

  • Post-processing and finishing techniques
  • Closing session

Format

The course combines theoretical lectures with practical demonstrations.

This course will be delivered in English.

A course certificate will be provided to all participants who complete the course.

Assumed background

Participants should hold a degree in a field of Life and Earth Sciences.

This course does not cover 3D modelling. Participants should be familiar with types of 3D model files.

Equipment

Participants are expected to bring their own laptop.
