Course QGIS An Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Course Overview

This course is designed to introduce participants to the world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using QGIS, a free and open-source software widely used for spatial analysis. Throughout the course, students will learn the basic concepts of GIS, how to visualise geospatial data, perform simple analyses, and create thematic maps, acquiring practical skills applicable to academic, professional, or personal projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the core principles of Geographic Information Systems
  • Navigate the QGIS interface and effectively operate its main tools and functionalities
  • Import, visualise, and manage different types of geospatial data
  • Perform basic spatial analyses
  • Create thematic maps and customise data symbology
  • Export maps and results for presentations or reports

We will combine theoretical lectures on fundamental GIS and QGIS concepts with guided practical demonstrations of QGIS in real time. These sessions will be complemented by individual exercises in data import, spatial analysis, and map creation, allowing participants to follow the instructor step by step.

Throughout the course, students will progressively develop a thematic map integrating the concepts and techniques introduced in each module, which will be submitted as a completed final map at the end of the course.

Places are limited to 16 participants.

Programme

Module 1: Introduction to GIS and First Steps in QGIS

  • Definition of Geographic Information Systems and overview of their practical applications.
  • Projections and coordinate reference systems.
  • Types of geospatial data: vector and raster.
  • Basic navigation of the QGIS interface: menus, toolbars, and panels.
  • Creating a simple QGIS project and loading example layers.

Module 2: Project and Layer Management in QGIS

  • Layer organisation and group management.
  • Importing and exporting geospatial layers.
  • Basic symbology for vector and raster layers.
  • Attribute queries and data selection.
  • Saving and managing QGIS projects.

Module 3: Basic Vector Analysis

  • Spatial operations (clip, difference, dissolve, intersection, union).
  • Creation of buffer zones around points, lines, or polygons.
  • Calculating polygon areas and line lengths.
  • Feature extraction by location: selecting or clipping points and lines within a polygon.

Module 4: Raster Data Analysis

  • Checking basic raster statistics and performing simple operations using the raster calculator.
  • Extracting raster values associated with vector polygon features.
  • Clipping rasters to an area of interest.

Module 5: Map Layout and Export

  • Map composition and print layout design: title, legend, scale bar, north arrow, data source, borders, and margins.
  • Exporting maps to PDF or image formats.
  • Best practices in digital cartography: colour use, contrast, visual hierarchy, and clarity.

Assumed Background

This course is aimed at students and professionals in biology, geography, environmental sciences, archaeology, and other disciplines that require spatial analysis, as well as individuals interested in acquiring GIS and digital cartography skills for academic or professional projects.

Previous experience with GIS is not required.

Software

 We will use the free and open-source software QGIS.

Dates & Schedule

Online live sessions on March 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th, 2027.

From 15:00 to 18:00 (Madrid time zone).

Total course hours: 22 (15 hours of online live lessons, plus 7 hours of individual work in between the live sessions).

This course is equivalent to 1 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The recognition of ECTS by other institutions depends on each university or school.

Format

In the live sessions we will combine online lectures with hands-on computational exercises. These will be complemented with individual exercises.

Live sessions will be recorded. However, attendance to the live sessions is required to obtain the course certificate.

This course will be delivered in English.
