Course Overview

Visuals have a key role in scientific communication. Visuals can make scientific knowledge accessible, attractive and clear for the audience. This course will provide you with the necessary skills to create effective visual materials to communicate science, and a toolkit to improve your designs at the service of scientific dissemination and outreach. This course is designed to enhance the attendees’ ability to use the power of images for scicomm. We will address basic graphic design principles applied to the communication of scientific concepts and we will explore a variety of visual formats with practical examples. You will walk through design resources and tools that will be a game-changer for your future work!

Programme

Day 1

  • Introduction: presentations.
  • Visual communication of science, applications and examples.
  • Sketching techniques hands-on!

Day 2

  • Strategy: planning your project, and concept.
  • Scalable Vector Vs Raster Graphics.
  • Use of colour effectively.
  • Introduction to Inkscape.

Day 3

  • Online Resources for Scientists.
  • Inkscape Hacks and Tricks to save your time.
  • Graphic design principles. Application in scientific communication.
  • Wrap up: Final project Illustration

Assumed Background

Participants do not need any skills/experience in art or graphic design.

Software & Materials

Please download and preinstall inkscape (open source) on your machine ahead of the course.

You will also need some paper and something to draw with (any kind of pencil, ball pen, or marker).

Dates & Schedule

Online live sessions on September 29th & October 6th and 13th, 2026.

From 9:00 to 13:30 (Madrid time zone).

Total course hours: 21 (13.5 hours of online live lessons, plus 7.5 hours of  participants working on their own, with tutored exercises).

This course is equivalent to 1 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The recognition of ECTS by other institutions depends on each university or school.

Format

In the live sessions we will combine online lectures with hands-on exercises.

Live sessions will be recorded. However, attendance to the live sessions is required to obtain the course certificate.

This course will be delivered in English.
