Course Gender and Science a comprehensive approachCourse Overview

The aim of this course is to provide people attending this course a basic toolkit to face the inequality that is still rampant in workplaces, research groups and projects.

This course has been thought to offer a critical understanding of how scientific knowledge and praxis are informed by gender and other axes of social difference.

The course is divided into three main sections that go through: i) theory; ii) empirical data and knowledge; and iii) policies, actions and strategies.

REQUIREMENTS

Participants must have a personal computer. The use of Webcam and headphones are strongly recommended, as well as a good internet connection.

SECTION 1. THEORETICAL COORDINATES

    • Introduction to women studies, gender studies and feminist studies
    • Nature vs. culture: the ongoing debate revolving around difference
    • The social construction of sex/gender binaries: signified bodies, subjects and identities
    • Intersectionality: entanglements and intertwined axes of social difference
    • Unpacking etno-hetero-patriarchy: material and symbolic effects

SECTION 2. FACING PROBLEMS IN SCIENCE AND EDUCATION: DATA AND EMPIRICAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Data and lived experience: pressing issues requiring action
    • Epistemological, methodological and ethical questions: objects and subjects of study, methods and techniques, ethic considerations
    • Invisibility, gender gap and hierarchical organization in Academic spaces
    • Paradoxical realities: exposure and deafening silences

SECTION 3. Policies, actions and strategies

  • Horizons of action: gender mainstreaming toolkits
    • Presence and visibility, participation and representation: descriptive or/and substantive?
    • Who cares? Work-life balance and parental leaves
    • Gender-inclusive/gender-neutral language
    • Codes of conduct and action against harassment, discrimination and retaliation (at all levels and stages): the need of safe day-to-day spaces
    • Thinking through: inclusive projects, research groups and workplaces

    After registration you will receive confirmation of your acceptance in the course. Payment is not required during registration.

Funding

Discounts are not cumulative and apply only on the Course Fee. We offer the possibility of paying in two instalments (contact courses@transmittingscience.com).

Former participants will have a 5 % discount on the Course Fee.

20 % discount on the Course Fee is offered for members of some organizations (Ambassador Institutions). If you want to apply to this discount please indicate it in the Registration form (proof will be asked later).

Unemployed scientists living in the country were the course will be held, as well as PhD students based in that country without any grant or scholarship to develop their PhD, could benefit from a 40 % discount on the Course Fee. If you want to ask for this discount, please contact the course coordinator. That would apply for a maximum of 2 places and they will be covered by strict inscription order.
