Course overview & Programme

The objective of this course is for participants to be able to:

  1. Visualise and perform the tests of correlation structures in time and space in our data set
  2. Adjust a GAM model
  3. Adjust a GAM+M model with auto-correlation structure (Temporal)
  4. Adjust a GAM+M model with auto-correlation structure (Spatial-Temporal)

Module I. Spatial and Temporal Autocorrelation    

  • Definition of spatial and temporal autocorrelation
  • Tools for detection of spatial and temporal autocorrelation
  • GAM Models
  • Theory of Additive Models (AM) and Generalized Additive Models (GAM)
  • Simple GAM Model
  • Fitting and Validation of a simple GAM model (bivariate)
  • Multiple GAM Models (multivariable)
  • Fitting and Validation of a multiple GAM model
  • Multiple GAM for count data with an offset

Module II. Mixed Models and GAMMs        

  • Introduction to Mixed Effects Models
  • Fitting GAM Model and Independence Validation
  • Fitting and validation of GAMM 1 Model
  • GAMM with temporal autocorrelation structure
  • Fitting and validation of GAMM 2 Model
  • GAMM with space-temporal structure
  • Resolution of specific work doubts

Basic knowledge of  working in R.

All participants must have a computer (Windows, Macintosh, Linux), with access to a good internet connection. The use of webcam and headphones is strongly recommended.

12 hours of live lessons, plus 9 hours of participants working on their own, with tutored exercises.

This course will be delivered live online

This course will be taught using a combination of live (synchronous) sessions on Zoom and tasks to be completed in between live sessions on the Slack platform.

Live sessions will be recorded. Recordings will be made available to participants for a limited period of time. However, attendance to the live sessions is required.

Places

Places are limited to 18 participants and will be occupied by strict registration order.

Participants who have completed the course will receive a certificate at the end.
