Course overview & Programme

This course aims to introduce participants to the basic concepts of statistical analysis, through examples belonging to the fields of palaeontology and archaeology. There will be lectures combined with exercises.

More than understanding the mathematical basis of each statistical analysis, this course intends to provide each participant with the tools to develop and statistically test different hypotheses.

We will be using free user-friendly software (PAST).

  • Introduction to the theory behind statistics and Hypothesis Testing.
  • Type of variables.
  • Graphs: Bar charts, Pie chart, Histograms, Box-plots
  • Descriptive and inferential statistics. Parametric and non-parametric statistics.
  • Distributions, Frequency and probability. Normality. P-value. Type I and II errors.
  • Comparing groups: T-test, paired t-test, ANOVA, MANOVA, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, PERMANOVA. Discriminant Analysis.
  • Association between variables: correlation and linear regression.
  • Working with counts: contingency table and chi-square test.
  • Exploratory Analysis: Cluster Analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA), Correspondence Analysis.

All participants must have a personal computer (Windows, Macintosh).

Webcam and headphones are required for the smooth running of the class, as well as a good internet connection.

Testimonials for this course

Introduction to Statistical Analysis in Palaeontology and Archaeology (online) – 2nd edition.

“I loved Sole as a teacher. She is very patient and takes the time to answer questions and explain a little more when she feels people are a little quiet and maybe don’t understand but are too shy to say so. Loved the Kahoots too.”

Introduction to Statistical Analysis in Palaeontology and Archaeology (online) – 2nd edition.

“I like the build up of subjects throughout the lessons. It’s in a very good order for understanding. I’m also happy language formed no limitations whatsoever. Sometimes it does with complicated subjects such as this, but there was no problem.”
