Population modelling provides insights on ecological and evolutionary processes as diverse as the probability of a local extinction, the evolution of cellular maintenance, or the influence of clonality on senescence.
With advances in computing power and theoretical developments, population models have evolved rapidly and new approaches such as Integral Projection Models (IPMs) have emerged.
This course will teach basic and advanced applications of IPMs. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to construct IPMs with their own data (or data provided by the instructors), and estimate a number of important population rates including sensitivity analyses, life table response experiments, stochastic projections and times to local extinction.
The course is targeted to MSc, PhD students and postdocs (although faculty are welcome to apply to) with a strong interest in demography, with an already existing foundation of population matrix models, and an intermediate level of R.
Participants with well developed scientific questions and collected data will be given priority, but the instructors will provide with example data to those with no data.
Graduate or postgraduate degree in Life Sciences. Some knowledge of population matrix models and intermediate level of R is required.
All participants must bring their own personal laptop. We would like to encourage participants to bring along their own data.
